Aniseed Oil for Fishing

Aniseed oil has been used by anglers for many years as a scent additive in both freshwater and saltwater fishing.
The oil contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds, primarily anethole, which produce a distinct
liquorice-like scent that disperses readily in water.

Because fish rely heavily on olfaction (smell) to detect food and navigate their environment, scent additives
such as aniseed oil are commonly applied to bait, berley and artificial lures to introduce an additional scent trail.

Why Anglers Use Aniseed Oil

  • Scent enhancement: Adds a strong, recognisable aroma to natural or artificial bait.
  • Odour masking: May help reduce human handling smells on tackle and bait.
  • Water dispersion: Oil spreads across the water surface and disperses gradually, creating a detectable scent zone.
  • Versatility: Used in estuary, freshwater and offshore fishing applications.

Common target species reported by anglers include trout, bream, flathead, whiting, bass and catfish, although effectiveness
depends on conditions, species behaviour and application method.

How It Is Commonly Used

  • Add a few drops to bait or soft plastics before casting.
  • Mix small amounts into berley blends.
  • Apply lightly to hard-body lures or flies.
  • Reapply periodically, particularly in moving water.

This product is supplied as a pure essential oil. For fishing applications, only small quantities are typically required due to the oil’s
strong aromatic profile.

FAQs

Does aniseed oil attract fish?

Aniseed oil is commonly used by anglers as a scent additive. Fish rely heavily on smell, and the liquorice-like aroma disperses in water.
Reported effectiveness varies by species, water conditions and application method.

Why is aniseed oil used in fishing?

It is primarily used to enhance scent. Anglers apply it to bait, soft plastics or lures to introduce an additional aroma into the water,
and it may help mask human handling odours on tackle.

What fish species respond to aniseed oil?

Anglers commonly use aniseed oil when targeting trout, bream, flathead, bass, whiting and catfish. Response depends on local conditions
and feeding behaviour.

How do you use aniseed oil on bait?

Only a small amount is required. A few drops are typically added directly to bait, mixed into berley, or lightly applied to artificial lures.
Reapplication may be needed in moving water.

Is pure essential oil safe to use for fishing?

Pure aniseed oil is highly concentrated, so minimal quantities are generally used. Application methods vary between anglers. Avoid overuse,
as essential oils are potent.

Can aniseed oil be used in both freshwater and saltwater?

Yes. It is commonly used in freshwater streams, estuaries and offshore environments. Scent dispersion may differ depending on salinity and water movement.

Questions of our Essential Oils

Can I ingest / eat the essential oils?

Regarding our essential oils, they are all top quality and we can provide a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) on request (they are tested every batch, so the CoAs change regularly).

However no essential oils are considered food-grade by law in Australia, though these are as good quality as you can get.

Technically in Australia you’re not supposed to use any essential oils internally, as they are classed a poison by the TGA.

What you do with a product once it’s in your hands is up to you.

What is the difference between essential & fragrance oils?

Essential oils are derived from natural plant material through distillation or cold pressing, and are highly concentrated with the natural aromatic compounds of the plant.

They are known for their therapeutic properties and are commonly used in aromatherapy and other wellness applications.

Fragrance oils, on the other hand, are synthetic scents that mimic natural materials, and are used primarily for their scent in products like perfumes, candles, and other scented items.

While essential oils offer physical and emotional benefits, fragrance oils are solely for scent.

If you’re looking for natural, therapeutic benefits, choose essential oils.

If you simply want a pleasant aroma that is cheaper, fragrance oils are a good option, though we are discontinuing these…
